Management
Mr. Grossman was appointed as the Company's President and Chief Executive Officer and to the Board of Directors effective December 8, 2011. Previously, Mr. Grossman served as a Managing Director at Texas Pacific Group ("TPG"), a private equity firm, where he initiated and led the medical device venture investing effort, and also served as a Senior Advisor to the firm's buyout fund. Prior to joining TPG in 2007, Mr. Grossman spent 23 years in a variety of industry operating roles, including as President and Chief Executive Officer of Thoratec Corporation from 1996 to 2006. Prior to joining Thoratec Corporation, Mr. Grossman was a Division President of Major Pharmaceuticals, Inc., from 1992 to 1995, at which time it was sold. From 1988 to 1992, Mr. Grossman served as the Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the Calcitek division of Sulzermedica (formerly Intermedics, Inc.). Prior to 1988, Mr. Grossman held various sales and marketing management positions within the McGaw Laboratories Division of American Hospital Supply Corporation. Mr. Grossman serves on the boards of directors of Thoratec Corporation and several private medical product companies, and previously served on the boards of directors of Intuitive Surgical, Inc. and Kyphon, Inc. Mr. Grossman received a BS in life sciences from The Ohio State University and an MBA from Pepperdine University.
Mr. Lichtwardt joined Conceptus as Executive Vice President, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer in November 2003 and was promoted to Executive Vice President, Operations, Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer in April 2008. From 2000 to 2002, he was Executive Vice President, Finance, Chief Financial Officer and Corporate Secretary of Innoventry, Inc., a financial services company. From 1993 to 2000, Mr. Lichtwardt was Vice President, Finance, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer of Ocular Sciences, Inc., a worldwide developer and marketer of soft contact lenses. Prior to his employment with Ocular Sciences, Mr. Lichtwardt, from 1989 to 1993, held senior management positions in various divisions of Allergan Inc. Mr. Lichtwardt currently serves on the Board of Directors of Biolase Technology, Inc., a public medical and dental laser products company, where he also participates on the Audit, Compensation and Quality Compliance Committees. In addition to these positions, Mr. Lichtwardt has held various financial positions at AST Research, Inc. and at divisions of American Hospital Supply Corporation. He earned a B.B.A. degree from the University of Michigan and an M.B.A. degree from Michigan State University.
Mr. Coté joined Conceptus as Vice President of Sales in April 2004. He currently serves Conceptus as the Executive Vice President of Global Sales and Business Development. From 2003 to 2004, Mr. Coté was Senior Director of Sales, Gynecology Division at American Medical Systems. From 2000 to 2001, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Collagenesis, a developer and marketer of products derived from reengineered and processed human tissue. Prior to Collagenesis, from 1996 to 2000 Mr. Coté was Director of Sales and Marketing for Influence, a medical company developing a treatment for incontinence, and from 1990 to 1996 he held various sales positions at Indigo Medical and Osbon Medical Systems. He earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration from California State University at Sacramento.
Ms. Brooks joined Conceptus as Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary in November 2009 and was promoted to Executive Vice President, General Counsel, Secretary and Chief Compliance Officer in February 2010. Prior to joining Conceptus, Ms. Brooks was Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Perlegen Sciences, Inc., a Silicon Valley biotechnology company developing genetic-based diagnostic tests, from November 2007 to November 2009. Prior to her work at Perlegen, Ms. Brooks served as General Counsel for several medical device and life sciences companies, both public and private, including Westmark International, Inc. (a former Squibb company), Access Health, Inc. and Free & Clear, Inc., and for eCommerce companies including GiftCetificates.com, Inc. and eCharge, Inc. Ms. Brooks earned her law degree from Santa Clara University, her Masters of Law in Taxation from Georgetown University, and her M.B.A. degree from the University of Washington, where she also earned a B.A. degree in Comparative Literature and a B.A. degree in English Literature.
Mr. Trujillo joined Conceptus as Executive Vice President of Marketing in January 2011. He is responsible for developing marketing, brand, advertising, and strategy for the professional and consumer markets served by the Company. From 2009 to 2011 he was Director of Strategy, Innovation, New Product Development and Marketing for Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (USA), where from 2006 to 2009 he was Director of Women's Healthcare, Consumer Marketing. From 2004 to 2006, Mr. Trujillo was Director, Respiratory Marketing for Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals Division. He previously was Director, Oncology Marketing from 2000 to 2004 for Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Mr. Trujillo also held various management positions with pharmaceutical companies including Warner Lambert, Richwood Pharmaceuticals and Solvay Pharmaceuticals, as well as with Procter & Gamble Company. Mr. Trujillo has a B.S. degree from the University of New Mexico and an M.B.A. degree from Pepperdine University.
Dr. Ozdil brings to Conceptus 19 years of medical device experience that spans new product research, development, and commercialization, program management, business development, and intellectual property management. He is responsible for leading the Company's ongoing research and development efforts, which will include improvements to the Essure procedure. Dr. Ozdil has held various executive, management, and engineering positions for both large and small medical device companies including Nanovasc, Angioscore, Medtronic Cardiovascular, Arterial Vascular Engineering, and Baxter Althin Medical. His accomplishments include the development and successful launch of more than 20 cardiovascular devices such as Class III stents and catheters for the treatment of coronary and peripheral artery diseases. Dr. Ozdil has also held several director-level positions at Medtronic Cardiovascular, where his work included building and leading teams for the invention and development of new advanced products integrating biotechnology onto device platforms, including drug-eluting metallic and biodegradable stents.
Mr. Essex joined the Conceptus management team in January of 2007 and currently serves as the Vice President of Professional Marketing. In this role, he is responsible for strategy development and the implementation of programs targeting consumers, patients and clinicians. He previously served as Vice President of Sales and National Sales Director, and will focus on strategic synergies and collaboration between the Conceptus sales and marketing organizations. Prior to joining Conceptus he has held various senior sales and marketing roles at Boston Scientific Neuro and Johnson and Johnson's Ethicon, Inc. division. He was also a Captain in the United States Army serving in various leadership positions throughout the world. Mr. Essex received his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin and his Masters in Business Administration from Jones International University.
Mr. Letasse joined Conceptus as Senior Director of IT in October 2002 and was promoted to Vice President Information Technology & Business Systems in February of 2009. From 1998 to 2002, Mr. Letasse was Co-Founder, Executive Partner at FTL, LLC, a small boutique consulting firm that specialized in systems implementation & integration services for SF Bay Area electronics and medical device manufacturers including, but not limited to, Affymetrix, Macromedia, Extreme Networks, Cohesion, Inc, Avocet Medical, and Conceptus. Prior to consulting, Mr. Letasse held various IT management positions at Network Peripherals (1997-1998), a networking company, Xilinx (1993-1997), an FPGA/Chip maker, Silicon Graphics/MIPS Computer Systems (1986-1992), Unix Workstation/RISC Chip makers, and Convergent Technologies (1983-1986), an early Silicon Valley workstation manufacturer. He holds a B.S. degree in Business Administration from Valley City State University, ND, and an MBA in Information Technology from Golden Gate University, San Francisco, CA.
Mr. Roeck joined Conceptus as Vice President of International in September of 2007 and is responsible for all aspects of the Company's international operations. From 2003 to 2007 Mr. Roeck was with VNUS Medical Technologies as the Senior Director of International Sales and Marketing where he managed both direct sales and distributor growth of over 30%. From 2000 to 2003 Mr. Roeck held the position of Business to Business Account Executive with Eli Lilly and Company. Prior to his employment with Eli Lilly and Company, he was residing overseas as the Regional Sales Manager in Asia/Middle East and later Europe for Palco Labs, a medical device manufacture. Mr. Roeck received a Bachelor's degree in International Business from California State University San Jose and attended Thunderbird, The American Graduate School of International Management.
Mr. Sloan joined the Conceptus management team in February 2008 and currently serves as the Vice President of Sales Training and Professional Education, leading the development of world-class development programs for clinicians and the Conceptus field sales force. Prior to assuming these responsibilities, Mr. Sloan has managed several functions at Conceptus including marketing, R&D and strategic planning. Prior to joining Conceptus, he was a Director of Marketing at Boston Scientific, overseeing their women's health portfolio. Over his eleven years with Boston Scientific, Mr. Sloan held positions with increasing responsibility in both sales and marketing in the urology and gynecology specialties. Mr. Sloan received his undergraduate degree from Penn State University and Masters in Business from Lehigh University.
Mr. Villalba currently serves Conceptus as Vice President and General Manager of Europe. He joined Conceptus in July 2004 as Senior Director of Business Development and was promoted in December 2007 to the position of General Manager of Europe, to grow the European business following the acquisition of Conceptus SAS. Previously, Mr. Villalba held various Marketing, Sales Management, and Corporate Development positions at VIVUS, Inc. from December 1996 to December 1999 and again from January 2001 to July 2004. Additionally, Mr. Villalba served as Product Manager at Collagen Corp., from December 1999 to January 2001, when the company was acquired by Inamed. Earlier in his career, he held International Sales Management and Sales positions with Osbon Medical Systems. Mr. Villalba earned a BA in Business Management at Menlo College.
Mr. Waters joined Conceptus as Corporate Controller in October 2006 and was promoted to Vice President, Finance and Corporate Controller in February 2009. Mr. Waters was Corporate Controller of Laserscope, a medical device company, from 2005 to 2006 which became a part of American Medical Systems through its 2006 acquisition of Laserscope. From 2004 to 2005, Mr. Waters was Director of Finance of VISX, Inc, the leading provider of laser vision correction equipment, which became a part of Advanced Medical Optics through its 2005 acquisition of VISX. Prior to his employment with VISX, Mr. Waters was in the audit and assurance practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP. Mr. Waters received his degree in both Accounting and Finance from California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo. Mr. Waters is also a certified public accountant in the State of California.
Mr. Yu was named Vice President of Regulatory, Clinical and Medical Affairs at Conceptus in September 2009. In this role, he oversees the company's medical affairs and global clinical research activities, and regulatory affairs efforts. Mr. Yu joined Conceptus in July 2006 and most recently served as Senior Director of Clinical Research and Regulatory Affairs. From 2003 to 2006, he was responsible for the regulatory affairs strategies supporting new ventures and research and technology programs at Guidant Vascular Intervention, which became a part of Abbott Laboratories through its 2006 acquisition of Guidant VI. Before joining Guidant, Mr. Yu held positions in regulatory affairs, marketing, finance and manufacturing at diverse healthcare companies including Durect Corp., Lumenis, Inc., Lifescan, Inc., Roche Bioscience, and Genentech. He holds a B.S. degree from the University of California at Davis, and an M.B.A. degree from Santa Clara University.
